Switch the model inside a session

The model chip in the message field switches the model; the conversation stays the same.

Some tasks need a stronger model, others a faster and cheaper one. You do not need a new session for that.

Step by step

  1. Open a Claude or Codex session.
  2. At the bottom of the message field, next to ⚡, there is a chip with the model name. Click it.
  3. Pick a model from the list.
  4. The chip updates. Your next message goes to the new model.

How it works for each agent

  • Claude. The model switches when the agent is free. Same conversation.
  • Codex. Hedoq restarts the tab with the chosen model and the same conversation. The list is whatever Codex itself offers.
  • Your own model, Gemini, OpenCode, custom command. The chip only shows the name; there is nothing to pick.

Which models are listed

  • Claude: Opus, Sonnet, Haiku and Fable.
  • Codex: the models Codex shows for your sign-in, in its own order.

The current model is shown not only on the chip. The notch and the iPhone sidebar label every session with its model.

When to switch

  • A hard task, like architecture or tracking down a bug: take a stronger model.
  • A simple, repetitive task, like renaming or fixing text: a faster model is enough.
  • One model’s limit is running low: the notch shows what is left, so switch ahead of time.

On iPhone

Tap the model name in the session’s message field and pick another one. It works the same way as on the Mac.

Good to know

  • If the agent is busy, Claude switches the model once the turn ends.
  • An incognito Codex session cannot switch models.
  • If a switch fails, a hint with the reason shows for a few seconds.
  • In a model council you do not pick models for members: each member is its own agent.
